Israel threatens to bomb Russian arms shipment to Syria

Israeli officials this week said they would "know what to do" if Russia goes through with the planned sale of an advanced anti-aircraft system to Syria. Given Israel's recent pinpoint air strikes in Syria, the remarks were taken as a thinly veiled threat to destroy the Russian arms the moment they touch Syrian soil.
"Delivery [of the S-300] has not taken place – I can attest to this – and I hope it does not. But if, by some misfortune, they arrive in Syria, we will know what to do," Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon told reporters.

Russia still set to sell advanced missiles to Syria

Despite earlier reports to the contrary, Israeli officials on Sunday said that Russia has not struck a deal with Jerusalem that would halt the sale of advanced Russian-made anti-aircraft missiles to Syria.
London's Sunday Times cited unnamed Israeli sources as saying that a meeting last week between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had resulted in a cancellation of the planned sale.

BEIRUT, Lebanon — The leader of Hezbollah, the powerful Lebanese militant group, escalated tensions with Israel on Thursday over the recent Israeli airstrikes near Damascus, suggesting that the Syrian government would respond by providing Hezbollah fighters with the same weapons that Israel wants to keep out of their hands.

While the Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah, did not specify the type of arms, he said that they were “unique weapons that it never had before” that would “change the balance” of power with Israel, which regards his group’s alliance with Syria and Iran as one of its most potent security threats.
